The oldest and most dominant male condors in California live in Ventura County, and Purist was clearly looking for the best male she could find. She therefore chose to settle in Ventura County permanently with a male 18 years older than herself. AC-9 (#21) is somewhat a legend in condor world, in 1987 he was the last condor to be free flying in the wild before all were taken into captivity for their safety and to secure a future for the population. His successful release, after 15 years in a breeding program at the LA Zoo, marked a new turning point for the survival of the California condor.
