Life History
Lead Poisoning
Hatchday: April 8, 1999
Release Date: March 4, 2000
Hatch location San Diego Wild Animal Park
Sex: Male
Current Status: Partnered with Wild1 (#231)
Offspring: Genetic father to #477
Current location: Big Sur, CA
He paired with Wild1 (#231), one of our wildest and sharper condors. She has been an excellent influence on The Great One , and in the winter of 2007/2008 they were the first pair of the Big Sur flock to successfully lay a fertile egg, incubate it and fledge their chick, (#477), who we named “Phoenix.”
Our initial expectations of The Great One were not high, but it turned out that his artificial rearing didn't prevent him from becoming an ideal condor and a great parent. His nickname is something we yelled out in the old days when we saw him doing well in the wild. Many of us have picked him as their favorite because he has shown us that underdogs can be successful.
