The Rock is one of our largest condors. This doesn't stop him from trying to look even larger by puffing out the air sacs in his neck. All male condors do this, but The Rock does it all the time. Males generally inflate their necks to intimidate other males or to impress females. We don't think The Rock is fooling anyone. He has a reckless and naïve personality and has been known to get into some real scrapes with other condors. He is paired with Pinnacles female condor #310 and in 2010 they fledged their first chick, #574 from their rocky inland territory.

Unfortunately this year the pair was not successful. Right before their egg hatched, 310 had to be taken in to the LA Zoo for lead poisoning treatment. The Rock managed to stay strong at the nest for the week while his mate was away, but when she returned he also needed to be brought into captivity for treatment. With The Rock in the zoo at this critical stage in nestling development, their chick died. Resilient birds, condors will try to re-nest each year they are not successful-- better luck nest year! You can often find The Rock perched on the most beautiful rocky bluffs in the area, soaring around Pinnacles National Monument, or high in the mountains of Big Sur.
