In the wild, Survivor enjoys the company of Ventana (#444), Big Sur's first wild hatched condor. It is quite common for young females to group together before they reach maturity. They focus on investigating new terrain and foraging skills. Males at the same age are not normally as exploratory. They focus more on social dynamics and their dominance within the hierarchy. However, once these condors reach puberty, the reason for these early differences becomes clear. Females choose the most dominant male available, and males choose females who have found excellent unclaimed breeding habitat. The male will be responsible for defending this territory using the aggression he has learned in his quest for dominance. The female will use her intimate knowledge of remote areas and her food-finding skills to support her family. In early 2009 she was found gunshot but amazingly she survived after treatment at the LA Zoo and was re-relesed by Ventana Wildlife Society.
